IN THE BEGINNING
Curious to see how much colour was mixed but unused in her salon one day, color bar manager founder Janine, left a bowl for stylists to collect leftover product. At the end of the day she needed a bigger bowl.
It made sense. Mixing errors, missing client recipes, juggling colours when the one you need is out of stock, Janine had experienced it all both as a salon owner and a stylist on the floor. Managing the colour bar was draining - there was someone to hand count colour tubes, someone to calculate orders, someone to edit and add client recipes... and someone for others to blame when things went wrong. In the high-pressure hairdressing environment mixing mistakes were easy to make, put the wrong colour or wrong ratio in the bowl and the whole mix would need to be thrown out - it happens to the best of us.
As a business owner, Janine knew that wasted product and time didn’t make good business sense. She’s owned both a large flagship salon and a bespoke space and found the same issues with colour bar management in both. There were good things happening in the hair industry, intelligent booking systems, savvy social media tools and education, but when it came to something smart for colour inventory there was a real gap. She set out to create color bar manager as a solution.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT
Developed with a leading IT creator and experienced salon industry team, Color bar manager was trialled in Janine’s busy, real life salon first. It had to work for the entire team from emerging talent to executive stylists, as well as salon coordinators, who without practical hairdressing experience couldn’t cut corners or fill in gaps. It was then taken to distributors and trial salons internationally - sent out with the message: give us your no-holds-barred feedback. We took everything on board, tweaked and refined.
CBM made bottom line business sense - the figures proved it. Still some feedback surprised and delighted us. For some salon owners it was all about reducing colour waste as part of a sustainable salon mission, for others it was about empowering their stylists to feel confident in the accuracy of their colour work. In Janine’s salon, the coordinator responsible for inventory freed up enough time to launch an online hair care store - and it’s flourishing.

Color bar manager is the brainchild of Janine Simons. With over 20 years salon ownership, education consultancy and hairdressing experience, Janine is a recognised industry leader. She’s been named L’Oreal Entrepreneur of the Year, HITO Educator of the Year, has won the Images Excellence in Marketing Award and been a finalist for the prestigious New Zealand Hairdresser of the Year title. She’s passionate about helping to build a stronger, smarter and more sustainable salon community. When she’s not working on color bar manager she travels in her role as Color.Master for Kevin Murphy Asia Pacific, she also still loves to get on the floor when she can at her salon in Wellington, New Zealand.
